About Us
How it began
Back in 2008 the founder of KECCT had just completed his coaching training and it struck him that coaching was hard to access for many of those who serve our communities ie leaders in schools and NGOs. So with the support of some fellow coaches he launched KECCT.

The idea was simple. The charity would look to provide certified coaches at either low or no costs. This was to be achieved through coaches offering their time pro bono or paying the coaches via fundraising and grants.

The work started with pilots in three schools, but while these were successful it was found to be quite challenging and time intensive to engage schools so the work in this area continued through the coaching of individual school leaders that approached the trust.

Within the NGO sector, which included churches, a series of workshops were run, plus individual coaching engagements. Initially the workshops were two days in duration, and while these were very well received they were modified to have two 1 day workshops seperated by around 2 months with the intervening time being used to provide participants with the experience of being coached. This was found to deepen the learning develivered in the workshops.

The Christchurch earthquakes saw a pause in activities and going forward the work was low key and focussed on individual coaching.
Covid delayed any thoughts of a re-launch, but 2024 saw an opportunity to ramp up activities again.

What is behind the logo?

The logo came out of the fact that the founder's surname was 'Keir' which rhymed with 'Kea'. Plus the kea, a parrot native to New Zealand, is considered one of the most intelligent birds in the world. Some scientists believe that keas are as smart as a 4-year-old child. They are able to solve logic puzzles, understand probabilities, and make predictions. For example, one kea learned that if it carried a piece of firewood to a hiking hut every day and then knocked on the door, it would get food in exchange. So now you know.
